3 Reasons to Get Revved Up About Plug-in Hybrid Vehicles

It’s no news that Singapore is veering towards cleaner solutions for greener roads. But stigmas attached to performance, price, and range of EVs still loom large.

For those still not ready to fully commit to the electric life, have you heard of plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs)? Equipped with both a petrol engine and chargeable battery, PHEVs are the perfect solution to ease the transition from petrol to pure electric.

Get to know what PHEVs like the BMW 330e iPerformance and BMW 530e iPerformance are really all about:

1. GOES THE DISTANCE: CAR RANGE

Leave all concerns about car range behind in the dust. For tiny Singapore, the BMW 330e iPerformance and BMW 530e iPerformance are more than capable.

On electricity alone, the BMW 330e iPerformance and BMW 530e iPerformance can go up to 40km and 45km respectively without a hitch. For individuals who do not commute more than 40km per trip, you can almost avoid tapping on petrol altogether. Need to go a little further? The 4-cylinder TwinPower Turbo petrol engine kicks in to extend your driving range.

Note that the range of both PHEVs are not fixed. They will vary depending on factors like personal driving behavior, air-conditioning, and load.

2. RIGHT NEXT DOOR: CHARGING LOCATIONS

With over 200 stations in more than 80 locations around the island, your charging needs are more than covered.

  • BMW ChargeNow: 58 public charging stations in 39 locations across Singapore. BMW Chargenow, in collaboration with Greenlots, continues to lead the charge towards an electric future as the largest charging network in Singapore.
  • SP Group: 38 charging points at commercial buildings, industrial site, and educational institutes. SP hopes to dish out 1,000 stations by 2020, catering to the increasing popularity of both PHEVs and electric vehicles.
  • ComfortDelgro: Charging station at Braddell exclusive for a select few vehicles, including BMW PHEVs.
  • Home charging: For drivers living in landed properties, BMW offers a free installation of the BMW i Wallbox Plus for home charging. And thanks to Greenlots, charging is now possible at 40 condominiums, with many more still pending.

3. PENNIES AND CENTS: CHARGING COSTS

Time to debunk a myth that has lived for too long: owning an electric-powered vehicle is expensive, let alone BMW's PHEV. Purchasing a BMW PHEV 330e iPerformance or 530e iPerformance would be a tad pricier than petrol-powered BMWs.

However, maintaining either model is far cheaper. A full charge won’t even come up to the price of a Starbucks coffee.

Note that the respective battery capacity of the BMW 330e iPerformance and BMW 530e iPerformance is 5.7kWh and 9.2kWh. The average charging time for either model is 2.5hrs.

  • Home Charging: Charging a BMW 330e iPerformance to full would cost you a mere $1.18. A full charge for a BMW 530e iPerformance costs slightly more at $1.90.
  • Greenlots: Charging to full can cost from nothing (free at selected locations) to $3/hr. Make payments conveniently using the BMW ChargeNow card, which is complimentary with any purchase of a BMW PHEV.
  • SP Group: Rates are $0.42/kWh for AC charging.
  • ComfortDelgro: Rates are $0.40/kWh for AC charging.

Estimated Cost of Charging a BMW 330e and 530e iPerformance

Home Charging  Greenlots  SP Power  ComfortDelgro
   $0.207/kWh  Free - $3 / h  $0.414/kWh  $0.40/kWh
 BMW 330e iPerformance   5. 7 kWh  $1.18     $2.36  $2.28
