Safety Bodyshell

The BMW safety bodyshell gives you excellent all-round protection: numerous reinforcements in the front, sides, the B column and the rear, plus new highly robust materials, ensure extremely effective occupant protection in the event of a collision.

The exceptional stiffness of the bodyshell starts with the specially reinforced body floor, constructed of high-strength steel. This serves as the solid foundation for the occupant cell. Strong A, B and C columns and integrated side impact protection, highly stable crossmembers along the sills and under the seats all create a very rigid safety cage that preserves the occupants' survival space in the event of an accident. 
The front and rear reversible bumpers can absorb impacts at up to 6 km/h without damage; if the collision is more serious (up to 15 km/h), easily-replaceable deformation elements behind the bumpers absorb the forces and protect the bodyshell.

In higher-speed collisions, the engine mounting acts as a crumple zone, reducing the danger of injury of the occupants and minimising damage to the vehicle. Intelligent use of high-strength materials and innovative lightweight materials such as aluminium improves the crash behaviour of your vehicle and reduces the expenses associated with repairing and replacing individual components.
